The Oregon Ducks’ 2026 season continues to face challenges. Head coach Dan Lanning confirmed on Monday that quarterback Dante Moore is unlikely to return this season. Moore sustained a concussion during their game against USC on September 28, when linebacker Desman Stephens hit him as Moore attempted to slide during a run.
Moore had resumed practicing with the team in recent weeks. However, Lanning stated that the Ducks’ medical staff has not cleared him to return to full game action. “We got clarity this past week,” Lanning said. “If it were up to Dante, he would want to play for the team. But it’s not up to him or me.” Lanning emphasized the serious nature of Moore’s injury but remained confident about his full recovery.
Before the injury, Moore had an effective season, throwing for 925 yards and nine touchdowns without any interceptions. Some speculated if Moore’s absence was related to Oregon’s three losses. Lanning dismissed this, noting Moore’s commitment as the scout team quarterback, providing valuable practice competition. “It’s not a selfish decision,” Lanning said. “This isn’t about the season not going the way he wants.”
Oregon has struggled without Moore. After losses to Oklahoma State and trying different quarterbacks, they added defeats to UCLA and Illinois. A lack of a consistent rushing attack compounded the Ducks’ decline. As a result, Lanning fired offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer.
Moore is now focused on recovery with an eye on the NFL Draft, where he’s projected as a first-round pick. Despite the troubled season, Oregon is preparing for upcoming games, including this weekend against Northwestern. The Ducks, who currently stand at 4-3, face uncertainty about postseason play and roster changes, including Dylan Raiola’s transfer from Nebraska to potentially become the starting quarterback.
