On Tuesday night, President Donald Trump and Democratic State Representative James Talarico conducted separate rallies in the Republican stronghold of Lubbock. Each event reportedly attracted thousands of supporters.
Talarico announced on social media that his rally at the Fiesta Center was attended by 4,000 people, as he aimed to win over a traditionally conservative voter base. He shared a photo of a crowded venue, stating, “Lubbock County voted for President Trump by 40 points. Tonight 4,000 people showed up at our rally. Texans are ready for change.”
The capacity of the Fiesta Center’s ballroom is 2,600, but KAMC reporter Jen Phillips disclosed that officials managed to expand this to accommodate 3,000 attendees. Additionally, the Texas Tribune noted that the line for the event extended several city blocks.
Meanwhile, across town, Trump supported Talarico’s Republican rival, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. A reporter from The Amarillo Tribune estimated that the arena was nearly full, with around 4,000 people in attendance. The exhibit hall at the Civic Center has a total capacity of 4,914.
Although the numbers suggest Trump’s rally had a slightly higher turnout, Talarico’s ability to gather significant support in a Republican-dominated county was notable. Lubbock County, which Trump won by 40 points in 2024, has not favored a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964.
Both campaigns were contacted by Newsweek for comments about the rally turnouts. This story is still progressing, with updates anticipated.
