The Milwaukee Brewers secured their first championship title on Wednesday night by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 of the World Series. This victory marked a historic moment for the franchise.
Led by Pat Murphy, the two-time NL Manager of the Year, the Brewers received significant contributions from first baseman Jake Bauers. Bauers, who was honored as the NLCS MVP, played a crucial role in their success.
During the on-field celebration, Bauers presented Murphy with the game ball from the final out, and the manager offered his congratulations to the standout player. In his remarks, Murphy seemingly took a dig at one of Bauers’ former teams, the New York Yankees.
Bauers previously played for the Yankees in the 2023 MLB season, participating in 84 games before being traded to the Brewers in November of that year. As Bauers approaches free agency this offseason, he might secure a substantial contract and possibly join a new team.
The 31-year-old, originally a seventh-round draft pick, embarked on a well-traveled journey early in his career. This included stints with the Tampa Bay Rays (2018), Cleveland (2019, 2021), Seattle Mariners (2021), and New York Yankees (2023). He spent the last three seasons with Murphy in Milwaukee.
In 2026, Bauers had an electrifying breakout season, achieving personal bests in various offensive categories such as home runs (26), RBIs (86), runs scored (93), hits (127), walks (94), and OPS (.874). His .266/.389/.484 slash line represented career highs over 578 plate appearances, and he achieved the third-best on-base percentage in the league.
The New York Yankees are navigating a busy offseason after another early playoff exit, losing to the Rays in the ALDS. The team announced that both general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone would return for the 2027 season, contingent on a season occurring.
MLB’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is set to expire on December 1, and there is widespread anticipation of a potential lockout.
