Controversial Timing of WNBA Finals Game 6 Draws Fans

2 hours ago 0

The WNBA drew significant criticism from fans after scheduling Game 6 of the WNBA Finals for 12:30 p.m. ET on a Thursday in Atlanta. The early start time was a result of a scheduling compromise, as the Atlanta Hawks had a game scheduled for Thursday night at State Farm Arena.

Despite the inconvenient timing, the game was a sellout. Over 17,000 enthusiastic fans packed the arena to watch the Golden State Valkyries face the Atlanta Dream. Attendees likely had to take time off work to attend, as the middle of a workday is an unusual time for a sporting event.

In a playful nod to the situation, State Farm Arena replaced their traditional pregame kiss cam with a “Work from Home Cam.” This highlighted fans who might have taken the day off to watch the game. Some fans humorously covered their faces when the camera pointed in their direction, feigning innocence for skipping work.

The unique scheduling decision added a playful twist while also subtly criticizing the league’s last-minute planning. Fans demonstrated strong loyalty by attending despite the timing.

The Valkyries had the chance to secure the 2026 championship title on Thursday with a win. If the Atlanta Dream emerged victorious, the series would continue with Game 7 at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Saturday, Oct. 31, where the final champion would be crowned.
