Pentagon Revises U.S. Military Casualty Figures Related to Iran Conflict

40 minutes ago 0

The Pentagon has adjusted its official count of U.S. military deaths linked to the conflict with Iran, raising the total to 23. This adjustment follows the inclusion of two additional Air Force fatalities in the casualty database. Both airmen’s deaths are classified as nonhostile, with one attributed to illness. The cause of the second airman’s death is still under investigation.

The recent entries were made in the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) updates on Wednesday and Thursday. The adjustments mean nonhostile fatalities now make up more than half of the deaths in the official tally. Of the 23 service members who died, 11 were killed by enemy fire, while 12 are classified as nonhostile.

Since the conflict’s onset in late February, 865 U.S. service members have been injured by enemy fire, according to DCAS. The system functions as the Pentagon’s primary record for tracking U.S. troop casualties during conflicts and other military operations.

Casualties are divided into two categories based on different phases of the war. “Operation Epic Fury” is the campaign’s initial phase that started on February 28 with U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran. This phase accounts for 15 deaths and 417 wounded service members.

The second category, “Overseas Operations,” addresses casualties since July 7. The Pentagon records eight deaths and 448 injured under this category, inclusive of the recently added Air Force fatalities.

Among the 12 nonhostile deaths is a U.S. military refueling tanker crash in Iraq in March, which resulted in the deaths of all airmen onboard. The casualty statistics thus encompass not only those killed by enemy actions but also service members who died during the extended military operation, classified as nonhostile.

The differences in classification are notable: nonhostile deaths now slightly surpass the 11 fatalities caused by enemy fire.

While the update focuses on fatalities, it acknowledges the significant injuries sustained by U.S. forces. Since hostilities commenced, the Pentagon reports 865 U.S. service members wounded in enemy actions.

More than half of the injuries occurred after a ceasefire between Washington and Tehran, amid retaliatory strikes. Operation Epic Fury includes 417 wounded, while 448 injuries are recorded under Overseas Operations beginning July 7.

The Air Force has yet to provide further details regarding the two added service members. Both deaths are nonhostile, with one resulting from illness and the other still under investigation. These updates alter the fatality figures but not the count of wounded, adding two nonhostile deaths to the Pentagon’s ongoing accounting of the Iran conflict.

The updated figures now reflect 23 U.S. military deaths and 865 wounded as a result of the conflict with Iran.
