Balancing Breadwinning and Family Life

59 minutes ago 0

Dear Carolyn: My husband is a stay-at-home spouse, and we’ve been married for 23 years. Throughout most of our marriage, we both juggled full-time jobs along with raising three kids. Recently, my career has flourished, and I now earn a substantial salary, which requires me to work approximately 50 hours a week.

When I’m not occupied with work, I prefer to unwind rather than manage chores, errands, or emergencies. My priority is to spend quality time with my husband, family, and friends.

Despite our arrangement working for us, jokes about me being the breadwinner often surface in social settings. My husband takes these in stride, choosing to let them “roll off his shoulders.” However, these comments often make me feel the need to defend him, as I worry about how others perceive him.

My husband, however, assures me that these jokes do not bother him. He encourages me to focus on the positives and appreciate the things that truly matter, which are our family’s well-being and the time we enjoy together. I strive to adopt his perspective and channel my energy into nurturing our relationships, both with him and our friends.
