Luka Doncic’s Stellar Season Start with the Lakers

Luka Doncic has consistently impressed Lakers fans since joining the team. As the current scoring champion, he continues to set new standards. Even by his elevated benchmarks, this season’s start stands out, sparking comparisons to legends of the past.

The Toronto Raptors witnessed Doncic’s prowess on Sunday, when he scored 45 points, collected 15 rebounds, and made five steals in a 131-125 victory. At the Crypto.com Arena, fans chanted “MVP” every time he approached the free-throw line.

ESPN Insights highlighted Doncic’s performance on X, comparing his current form to one of the greatest players ever. “Luka Doncic is averaging 37.7 PPG this season, the 5th highest in NBA history through six games and the most since Michael Jordan in 1986-87. Luka surpassed his own record for the highest PPG by a Lakers player at this stage,” they wrote.

Doncic’s performance against Toronto was remarkable on its own. He made 12 out of 23 shots, sunk eight three-pointers, and converted all 13 free-throws in 35 minutes. This marked his 20th 40-point game with the Lakers.

The victory was well-timed. Two nights before, the Lakers lost to the Golden State Warriors after leading by 25 points. Against Toronto, they were up by 26 points before the game tightened near the end.

Doncic has scored 37 or more points in four consecutive games, including a 52-point display against Utah. He averages 8.2 rebounds and 7.3 assists while shooting 43.2% from three-point range. With LeBron James’ departure after eight seasons, Doncic has taken on the leadership role. The Lakers hold a 5-2 record as they prepare for Monday’s game against the Miami Heat.

Michael Jordan ended the 1986-87 season with an average of 37.1 points per game. Doncic is currently set to surpass this milestone.
