Russell Wilson Considers Coaching Role at NC State

44 minutes ago 0

Russell Wilson may soon transition from television to college football as reports state he interviewed for the head coaching position at NC State. The athletic director, Boo Corrigan, is considering both Wilson and Philip Rivers, two prominent figures with ties to the program, to fill the vacancy left by Dave Doeren’s recent departure.

Wilson, a former NFL star, recently retired after 14 seasons. His achievements include a Super Bowl victory and 10 Pro Bowl appearances. Since June, he has been working in a CBS studio role, but he might be lured back into college football, where he began his journey.

Russell Wilson had an eventful college career, starting at NC State in 2008. He remained there until 2010, under coach Tom O’Brien. After a disagreement over prioritizing baseball, Wilson transferred to Wisconsin. There, he claimed a Big Ten title before entering the NFL, where he enjoyed a remarkable career.

On the other hand, Philip Rivers emerges as a candidate with coaching experience. Rivers, who has been coaching high school football in Alabama, plans to finish the high school season before making any decisions regarding the NC State position.

While Wilson never coached before, he holds the potential to bring significant booster support to the program. His name alone could help secure financial backing in the rapidly evolving college football landscape where name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals are critical.

Wilson’s impact on the field was substantial; he accounted for 93 touchdowns during his college days at NC State. In his NFL career, he amassed nearly 47,000 passing yards, 353 touchdowns, and won a Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

NC State’s consideration of Wilson indicates a desire for national attention and strong financial backing, leaving open questions about his practical coaching ability. NC State’s decision could mark a significant chapter for Wilson and the program as they weigh the benefits and risks of hiring someone with high-profile experience over traditional coaching experience.
