Meta has decided to move away from naming its AI models after fruit, according to an inside source. This shift aligns with Meta’s strategy to present its AI developments with a more serious image.
The internal codename for Meta’s recent AI model, Wonder Full, was “Watermelon.” This marks a departure from earlier models named “Avocado” and “Mango.” The company revealed the model’s launch by sharing photos of the corresponding fruit.
Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg and AI leader Alexandr Wang discussed this change humorously on the Cheeky Pint podcast. “We’re out of fruits,” Zuckerberg remarked. Wang added, “The only fruit larger might be a durian, and we certainly don’t want to go there.”
This trend isn’t unique to Meta. In 2025, OpenAI used “Garlic” for one of its models, while Google introduced an image generator named “Nano Banana.” However, as AI technology advances, using more awe-inspiring names has become common, with names like Anthropic’s Mythos and OpenAI’s Astra.
Meta has not publicly commented on its decision to change its naming convention.
