Jill Biden Expresses Skepticism About a Female President in Her Lifetime

Former first lady Jill Biden expressed doubts on Wednesday about witnessing a female president during her lifetime. She remarked that former Vice President Kamala Harris was her choice for the first female leader.

In a discussion on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, Ripa asked if they would see a female president in their lifetimes. “In my lifetime? Well, I’m 75. So, you know, I feel like probably not in my lifetime, Kelly, but maybe in yours,” Biden said.

Jill Biden emphasized her belief that Harris would make history as the first woman president. She recalled her campaign efforts for Harris. “I saw the excitement, the crowds, and the energy. I thought, ‘Finally, we’re going to have a woman president,’” she added.

Patrice Onwuka, vice president of economic policy at Independent Women, reacted to Biden’s comments, stating they diminish other female Democrats with aspirations for 2028, such as AOC and Gretchen Whitmer. “Jill Biden’s remarks are a slap to the bench of female Democrats,” Onwuka said.

Onwuka noted that Harris’s defeat was due to her status quo stance. She argued that the focus should shift from gender to policy.

Kelly Ripa shared her perspective, saying, “I’m hoping that at a certain point, that changes. I don’t know what it will take. I don’t think social media helps.”

Former first lady Michelle Obama also voiced her beliefs about America not being ready for a female president. In November, she mentioned that the nation “ain’t ready” citing Harris’ loss in 2024.

Kamala Harris disagreed with this notion in December 2025. She told The New York Times, “I do believe the country is ready.” Her book tour saw thousands of attendees, showcasing public interest.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also disagreed with Obama’s remarks but acknowledged necessary changes in the U.S. She questioned why a female commander-in-chief would be out of the question, highlighting that women serve in the military too.

This dialogue among prominent figures underscores ongoing discussions about gender and leadership in the United States.
