Layoff Perks: Extra Assistance for Career Moves

2 days ago 0

Getting laid off can be tough, but some companies are offering more assistance to ease the transition. Canva is one such company. Recently, they announced that over 1,200 employees would be let go. To help these employees, Canva is providing exit packages that go beyond traditional offerings.

These packages include severance, extended healthcare, and enhanced job-search support. This support features one-on-one interview preparation, a year of LinkedIn Premium, and access to a networking directory. Canva also offers a chance to apply for $10,000 grants for those starting their own ventures.

Offering career resources is not unique, but Canva and a few others are offering more extensive aid. This helps soften the blow of layoffs, reduces public criticism, and reassures remaining employees.

Greg Simpson from LHH, a talent solutions firm, noted that this trend aligns with what he sees in the industry. He mentioned that employers are increasingly offering robust career support.

Supportive Measures by Other Companies

Verizon, having cut over 13,000 jobs last year, created a $20 million fund for reskilling and career transition. This covers over 30,000 courses and 80 certificate programs focusing on ‘in-demand skills.’

Chevron, planning significant layoffs by year-end, offers educational assistance. They reimburse up to 75% of qualifying coursework costs to aid employee career preparation.

These initiatives may stem from layoffs becoming more frequent. LHH’s 2026 report showed 87% of HR leaders anticipate further layoffs. Also, 58% of supported laid-off workers transitioned to new careers.

As AI alters job requirements, companies increasingly include career-transition support in their strategies. Others offer lucrative voluntary buyouts as alternatives to severance.

Maintaining Positive Workplace Culture

Enhanced support helps maintain workplace morale. Pav Stojkovic, an experienced HR leader, stated this approach helps preserve positive culture for remaining staff.

Furthermore, companies use these measures to mitigate social media backlash. Matthew Whol, an outplacement platform operator, noted that effective employee exits can turn former workers into advocates instead of critics. He emphasized that former employees could become the company’s best promoters.
