Rep. Don Bacon from Nebraska expressed doubts about Pete Hegseth’s role as Secretary of Defense. Bacon, an Air Force veteran with 30 years of service, criticized Hegseth’s leadership and questioned his moral judgment in an interview with Fox News Digital. This criticism came after Democrats regained control of both Congress chambers, hinting at possible impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump’s Cabinet members.
Bacon voiced his concerns about Hegseth’s personal conduct, suggesting that it would have led to disciplinary actions in the military. He highlighted the controversy over using the Signal app for sensitive military discussions. “Anybody caught having affairs would’ve gotten fired,” Bacon remarked, pointing to Hegseth’s lack of accountability.
The concerns reflect broader skepticism towards Hegseth, especially among lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Bacon’s comments suggest a lack of support for Hegseth, which could prompt impeachment discussions in a Democrat-led House.
Sean Parnell, the Chief Pentagon spokesman, defended Hegseth, stating that he remains committed to his duties. Parnell emphasized Hegseth’s dedication to supporting the Constitution and leading troops, regardless of political pressures.
As the political landscape shifts, some Democrats, like Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan, have sought Hegseth’s impeachment. The momentum followed significant Democratic victories during the midterm elections.
Bacon shared his views on the direction of the Republican Party, urging distance from Trump. He argued for principles aligned with former President Ronald Reagan, such as economic freedom and strong national security policies, while advocating for collaboration across party lines.
Regarding foreign policy, Bacon criticized Trump’s treatment of U.S. allies like Canada and Greenland. He attributed electoral losses to these foreign policy decisions, highlighting the need for a GOP shift in strategy to regain support.
