House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, is expected to become the next Speaker of the House. He has outlined his party’s plans following their midterm successes.
Jeffries mentioned the Democrats’ intention to end the conflict in Iran. He criticized the war for causing price increases in gasoline, diesel, and fertilizer. These hikes have affected the cost of everyday goods.
The party aims to pass a war powers resolution to urge former President Trump to conclude the war. This resolution would require Trump’s decision to either approve or veto it. Overriding a veto necessitates a two-thirds majority in both legislative chambers. Currently, Democrats lack this veto-proof majority.
While there are calls for the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Jeffries chose not to prematurely advocate for this course of action. Republican Representative Thomas Massie has threatened to push for a House vote on impeachment unless Hegseth resigns. Jeffries described Hegseth as the most unqualified defense secretary in U.S. history.
Jeffries stated that the House Judiciary and Oversight committees would examine allegations against the Trump administration.
Concerning new leadership for Democrats, including the next House Speaker, Jeffries emphasized that the decision lies with the House Democratic Caucus. He defended the Democrats’ achievements, highlighting their opposition to Trump on numerous issues and recent electoral victory.
