Manu Raju, CNN’s chief congressional correspondent, shared reactions from defeated Republicans regarding their losses in the midterm elections. Among these, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) provided a notable quote during a conversation with Anderson Cooper.
Lawler, who lost to Democrat Cait Conley in New York’s 17th Congressional District, faced challenges from the start. His district was one of three carried by Kamala Harris in 2024. Lawler expressed regret to CNN, believing he ran the best campaign possible but noted, “the bottom fell out.” When pressed further, he remarked, “Jesus Christ could have run and would have lost.” Cooper responded, “Wow, that’s quite the quote.”
There is uncertainty about whether a figure like Jesus would align with Trump’s policies if running as a MAGA Republican. Midterm results suggest voters might be discontent with the current GOP direction. In Lawler’s town halls, many constituents expressed frustration with his loyalty to Trump.
During a town hall in Mahopac, New York, Lawler faced criticism over issues like immigration and tariffs. He urged attendees to listen to questions being asked before reacting. Further, during a congressional hearing in July, Lawler exhibited extreme behavior. Invited to introduce a witness, he used the platform to deliver anti-immigration rhetoric, resulting in his removal from the hearing after remarks against Reps. Jamie Raskin and Pramila Jayapal.
Outside the hearing, Lawler candidly criticized Raskin and Jayapal, describing their conduct as disgraceful.
