In a recent interview, Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont expressed uncertainty regarding President Donald Trump’s position on Medicare-for-all legislation. Speaking on MS NOW, Sanders highlighted that while over 60% of Americans, especially 80-90% of Democrats, support Medicare-for-all, it’s not clear if Trump would reject such a bill outright.
Chris Hayes, the host, expressed skepticism about the bill’s chances, noting Trump’s likely resistance. “The odds of Donald Trump signing that into law are pretty small,” Hayes commented. But Sanders contested this viewpoint, emphasizing the responsibility of the Senate and House to push forward.
“Hold it. Trump has the constitutional right to veto, but we have the right to represent the American people and pass it,” Sanders asserted.
Sanders argued that Trump, despite eccentricities, is politically astute and might recognize a broken system and decide to act in favor. He stressed the importance of Democrats presenting the bill, regardless of the expected veto, so the public sees their efforts to address a flawed healthcare system.
Sanders has long advocated for Medicare-for-all. Its support has grown within the Democratic Party. His comments followed significant Democratic wins in recent midterm elections, suggesting a stronger mandate to pursue such reforms.
Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist and author, provided insight on Sanders’ strategy. He noted Sanders’ skill in connecting with public frustrations, suggesting that Sanders might be employing strategic praise to influence Trump, recognizing his political acumen.
