Five individuals lost their lives, and at least 12 suffered injuries when a gunman opened fire from a vehicle in Kraków’s Main Market Square on Saturday. Polish authorities reported the incident, which began around 3 p.m. as the attacker drove onto the square, indiscriminately shooting from his car.
The identities of the victims have not been disclosed. Among the injured were police officers. Authorities shot and injured the gunman during a confrontation, subsequently apprehending and transporting him to a medical facility. The suspect remains unidentified, and no motive has been publicly confirmed. Officials have yet to determine if the incident is related to terrorism.
Images depict emergency services, including police, ambulances, and firefighters, securing the historical site. An air ambulance was also called in, as per the officials’ updates.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated he is receiving updates from the interior minister following what he termed as a “tragic shooting.” On social media, he mentioned, “I am being kept informed by the Minister of the Interior about the situation in Krakow following the tragic shooting. The police are investigating the background and all the circumstances of the attack.”
Location of the Shooting
The assault took place in Kraków’s Main Market Square, or Rynek Główny, located at the core of the city’s historic center. Kraków, Poland’s second-largest city, is approximately 155 miles from Warsaw. Authorities have advised both residents and tourists to avoid the area while investigations are ongoing.
Hubert Cieply, a fire department spokesperson, confirmed that two police officers were among those wounded, according to sources.

Investigators are working diligently to uncover the reasons behind the shooting. Prime Minister Tusk noted that authorities are scrutinizing both the background and “all the circumstances” linked to the attack. The motive remains a significant unanswered question as inquiries persist.
