Ohio State’s Struggles as Oregon Overcomes

2 hours ago 0

Ohio State began the college football season as the top-ranked team but discovered that actual games are more unpredictable than preseason predictions. Ranked 12th in the College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes were favored against No. 23 Oregon but suffered a 41-28 defeat, marking their second consecutive loss.

Initial play hinted at a strong performance by Ohio State. They led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, despite missing Julian Sayin. However, Oregon responded aggressively with 38 unanswered points. A turning point occurred when Oregon successfully executed a fake punt during a 4th and 10 play, scoring a touchdown five plays later. An interception thrown by Luke Fahey allowed Oregon to secure a 17-14 lead by halftime.

Oregon maintained control as the second half commenced. Dierre Hill Jr. expanded their lead with a 48-yard touchdown run. Ohio State’s subsequent drives resulted in turnover on downs, while Oregon scored two additional touchdowns, reaching a 38-14 lead.

Jeremiah Smith, with seven catches totaling 133 yards, managed a late 57-yard reception, though his performance earlier had been limited. Ohio State now faces a challenge to qualify for postseason games, given their position outside the College Football Playoff rankings.

This loss followed a 30-18 defeat to USC, where Sayin was absent. Oregon’s offense was robust, with nine players catching passes from Dylan Raiola, who completed 25 of 40 attempts for 257 yards and two touchdowns. Dakorien Moore and Brandon Smith each scored and contributed 108 yards combined. Hill scored twice on 13 carries, amassing 75 yards.

With upcoming games against Northwestern, Nebraska, and Michigan, Ohio State hopes to improve. Oregon aims to secure a playoff position as they prepare to face Michigan, Michigan State, and Washington to conclude their season.
