Lee Mendelson Film Productions has initiated four lawsuits concerning the unauthorized use of Vince Guaraldi’s music from ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ and other ‘Peanuts’ TV specials. The suits, filed in federal courts in New York and Washington, D.C., target the U.S. Department of the Interior among other parties.
Allegations of Unauthorized Use
The lawsuits claim various defendants, including a video game company, an auction house, and a belt manufacturer, illegally used Guaraldi’s music. One case accuses the Interior Department of using Guaraldi’s rendition of ‘O Tannenbaum’ in an online holiday card without permission.
Another suit targets Heritage Auctions for allegedly using the track ‘Linus and Lucy’ in social media advertisements, while another names Buckle-Down Inc., which sells ‘Peanuts’ themed belts. Responses from these companies reveal little; Heritage Auctions has not yet reviewed the complaint, and others did not reply to inquiries.
Protecting Cultural Assets
Lee Mendelson Film Productions is addressing what it describes as excessive and unfair digital use of their assets. Attorney Marc Jacobson emphasized the importance of protecting cultural assets and copyright. The lawsuits aim to enforce strict measures against unauthorized use and seek damages, including at least $300,000 from GameMill Entertainment for its 2025 video game release.
The Legacy of ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’
Lee Mendelson Film Productions, established by Lee Mendelson, collaborated with ‘Peanuts’ creator Charles Schulz and director Bill Melendez on the TV specials. ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas,’ first aired in 1965, introduced Guaraldi’s music, which became synonymous with the ‘Peanuts’ brand.
Vince Guaraldi, a San Francisco jazz pianist known for his Grammy-winning ‘Cast Your Fate to the Wind,’ was chosen by Mendelson for his distinctive sound. His compositions, including ‘Linus and Lucy’ and ‘Christmas Time Is Here,’ remain iconic. Mendelson’s lyrics for the latter were spontaneously written. These songs have since become holiday staples and are tightly linked with the Peanuts legacy.
