1 month ago 0

The City Series concluded with high drama on Sunday at Rate Field. Initially, the White Sox took the lead in the eighth inning thanks to Tristan Peters hitting his first career home run, a three-run blast. The Cubs responded promptly in the ninth with Michael Conforto’s equalizing three-run homer.

Edgar Quero, struggling with his batting average, emerged as the hero in the 10th inning. He hit a decisive two-run home run off Cubs reliever Ryan Rolison, securing a 9-8 victory for the Sox. Quero entered the game with a .151 average and managed a three-hit day, including his inaugural home run of the season.

“It feels amazing,” Quero shared. “I knew it was going deep when I hit it.”

The game drew 38,608 spectators, all witnessing Quero’s notable contribution. Manager Will Venable praised the team’s performance and the fans’ support.

The Sox (24-22) secured their first series win against the Cubs (29-18) since 2022. They have won three consecutive series against Seattle, Kansas City, and the Cubs. The Cubs’ recent series losses include defeats by Texas, Atlanta, and now the Sox.

“Allowing nine runs is excessive,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell acknowledged. “But it was a good baseball game.”

The match was full of unexpected developments. The Cubs initially led with Michael Busch’s home run following Nico Hoerner’s single, establishing a 2-0 lead. Alex Bregman increased it to 3-0 with a wild pitch.

The Sox initiated a comeback in the second inning with a Quero RBI single. Bregman briefly extended the Cubs’ lead to 4-1 in the fourth on an infield single. Miguel Vargas began the Sox’s rally by contributing significantly over the fourth and fifth innings. He scored after being hit by a pitch and later tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run double.

The game remained tied until the eighth. Benintendi walked, Quero singled, bringing Peters to bat. Peters hit a sweeping pitch from Cubs reliever Phil Maton for a three-run home run, moving the Sox ahead 7-4.

“It was incredible, probably the most emotion I’ve ever shown,” Peters said.

Conforto brought the Cubs back into contention with a ninth-inning homer after a missed play by Vargas. He tied the game, ensuring an exciting finish.

The Cubs briefly led 8-7 in the 10th with Dansby Swanson scoring on Bregman’s grounder, but Quero’s homer effectively ended their hopes.

“It means a lot to win this series,” Quero stated, emphasizing the moment’s significance.

Quero regarded his home run alongside his major-league debut, considering it a significant personal achievement.
