Britney Spears’ DUI Incident and Legal Outcome

1 month ago 0

In March, Britney Spears faced legal trouble when she was arrested for driving under the influence in Los Angeles. According to a police report and dashcam video acquired by The Associated Press, Spears initially stayed in her BMW for about 10 minutes before getting out. Officers noticed she smelled of alcohol and seemed intoxicated during sobriety tests.

The report from the California Highway Patrol indicated her speech was rapid and slurred, her movement unsteady, and she appeared fidgety. Her mood varied from confrontational to compliant, and she occasionally spoke with a British accent. Spears claimed to have consumed only one mimosa earlier that day, describing her level of intoxication as “zero.” However, breath tests revealed blood alcohol levels of .05 and .06, below California’s legal limit of .08.

Officers found a bottle of Adderall, not prescribed to Spears, in her purse. Although she provided a blood sample for drug testing, the report did not include those results. Her representative did not respond to a request for comment.

The incident happened on March 4 when Spears was pulled over for speeding and swerving on U.S. 101 in Ventura County. She initially refused to exit her car due to past pranks and harassment, expressing concern about getting out on the highway. The video shows her suggesting they go to her home, offering to cook or swim in her pool. Spears was eventually handcuffed, taken to jail, and released on bail a few hours later.

Shortly after, Spears voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility. On May 4, she pleaded guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and drugs, avoiding additional jail time. Ventura County prosecutors stated the plea agreement is standard for first-time DUI defendants without accidents or injuries and low blood alcohol levels.

Spears’ attorney, Michael Goldstein, commented on the plea, noting that while no one enjoys pleading guilty, resolving the case was favorable. Spears, who rose to fame in the 1990s and 2000s with hits like “Toxic” and “… Baby One More Time,” became a frequent tabloid subject during personal struggles.

She spent nearly 14 years under a conservatorship mainly controlled by her father, which ended in 2021. Since regaining her freedom, she has married, divorced, and published a bestselling memoir titled “The Woman in Me.”

This story has been updated to correct the date of Spears’ arrest to March 4.
