Felix Rosenqvist secured victory in the 110th Indianapolis 500, delivering an exhilarating race. Rosenqvist surpassed David Malukas with a remarkable move in the final stretch, spoiling the American’s first IndyCar win. This finish set a record as the closest in Indy 500 history, with Rosenqvist triumphing by 0.023 seconds.
Scott McLaughlin placed third, followed by Pato O’Ward. This marks O’Ward’s impressive finishes, achieving second, third, and fourth in consecutive Indy 500 races. The race faced a dramatic moment when Brazilian driver Caio Collet crashed with seven laps remaining. Despite the fiery spin into the grass, Collet emerged unharmed. During the red flag, drivers were limited to refreshing in-car fans, drinking water, and changing batteries. Fuel and tires remained unchanged.
Rosenqvist capitalized on this period, overtaking O’Ward for the lead. O’Ward, a seasoned IndyCar victor, admitted his car’s struggles, deeming himself a “sitting duck.” With the final laps in sight, competitors pushed full throttle.
The green flag’s return saw Marcus Armstrong, Rosenqvist’s teammate, make a bold leap to the front. Malukas advanced to second, with Rosenqvist and O’Ward sliding to third and fourth. Despite another caution halting progress, the ultimate lap converged into a single fast-paced showdown.
On the final lap, Malukas led with Armstrong and Rosenqvist close behind. McLaughlin surged into third. Although Malukas anticipated victory, Rosenqvist maneuvered to claim first, celebrating fervently with his team.
Reflecting on the race, Malukas expressed emotional intensity, acknowledging his machine’s speed yet accepting the tight loss. Rosenqvist marveled at the achievement, thanking fans for enduring delays and rain. He shared heartfelt wishes for his wife and newborn daughter to have witnessed the significant win.
For Meyer Shank Racing, Rosenqvist’s triumph marks their second Indy 500 victory, following Hélio Castroneves’ fourth historic win. Castroneves, a vehicle co-owner, shares in the celebration.
