Ice Cream Maker Showdown: How Ninja Creami Stacks Up Against Competitors

4 weeks ago 0

In 2023, my colleague Zoe Malin tested and reviewed the Ninja Creami. At that time, the appliance was hard to find as it was selling out quickly at popular retailers like Costco and Best Buy. Today, the beloved Ninja Creami is more accessible, and the brand has introduced new versions including the Ninja Slushi and Ninja Creami Soft Serve Maker. Despite new entries into the market, the original Ninja Creami remains popular. Social media is filled with recipe ideas from food influencers using this appliance.

Competition has grown. Many brands have launched ice cream makers at lower price points. At $229, Ninja Creami competes with brands like Cuisinart, KitchenAid, and Nutribullet, which offer cheaper alternatives. Some newer models, like the GreenPan Frost, provide features the Ninja Creami lacks, such as eliminating overnight freezing.

Ninja Creami vs. Competitors

I teamed up with Malin to test several ice cream makers, assessing how they perform compared to the Ninja Creami. Our list included Cuisinart Fast Freeze, Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker, KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment, Nutribullet Chill, and GreenPan Frost.

Best Overall Ice Cream Maker: The Ninja Creami was sent to me for testing. It was my first choice for its popularity and extensive reviews. It uses a cream cheese base instead of the typical egg base in its recipe booklet. Freezing the ice cream base for 24 hours is necessary for desired texture. It comes with dishwasher-safe pints and a mixing bowl with a handle.

After testing, I confirm it lives up to the hype, rating it 9.9 out of 10 (minus points for loudness). Setup was straightforward, and the quick-start guide was helpful. After day-long freezing, it produced ice cream in about ten minutes. The texture was creamy and smooth, even without tempering. It compares well to store-bought ice cream, though loudness can be an issue.

Cuisinart FastFreeze Ice Cream Maker: Cuisinart provided this lightweight, compact appliance. Similar in pre-sets to Ninja Creami, it requires manual effort, using a handle that’s pushed up and down to mix ice cream. Despite requiring manual labor, it closely matches Ninja Creami’s texture. It’s more budget-friendly and ideal for small spaces.
