4 weeks ago 0

NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell delivered a poignant tribute to the late Kyle Busch’s family before the start of the Coca-Cola 600. Addressing Busch’s widow Samantha and their children Brexton and Lennix at Charlotte Motor Speedway, O’Donnell emphasized NASCAR’s unwavering support. He stated, “Samantha, I want you to know that this sport stands with you, and that you and your children are NASCAR family forever. And Brexton and Lennix, your dad loved you with all his heart. Everyone gathered here, everyone behind you, everybody watching on TV, and all those people up in that grandstand are your family — and we’ve got you.”

Samantha Busch, emotional, stood with 11-year-old Brexton, both donning shirts with “Battle of the Busches.” Kyle’s brother, Kurt, parents Tom and Gaye, and other family members were present. O’Donnell praised Kyle by saying, “Kyle Busch is NASCAR. He was one of a kind and there will never be another.” A moment of silence followed.

An emotional tribute for a legendary driver.

The Memorial Day weekend became a broader homage to Busch, who died at 41 due to complications from pneumonia and sepsis. He was celebrated across various events, with a large black No. 8 and Busch’s signature on Charlotte Motor Speedway’s lawn and his image on the videoboard. The U.S. Army Golden Knights displayed his flag, and each car in the race bore his decal. During the pace lap, the cars formed the missing man formation, and silence enveloped the eighth lap.

In the Truck Series race, Layne Riggs honored Busch with his signature post-win bow, mirrored by Ross Chastain after a victory. Fellow drivers like Joey Logano acknowledged Busch’s iconic status, saying he embodied the ideal race car driver.

Fans wore merchandise celebrating Busch, such as “Rowdy” and “KFB” shirts. Simultaneously, at the Indianapolis 500, Romain Grosjean’s car sported a font reminiscent of Busch’s days with Joe Gibbs Racing. During the event, race officials highlighted Busch’s name, birth year, and honorary year on the scoring pylon.

This weekend illustrated Busch’s impact on motorsport, with tributes from friends and competitors. Josef Newgarden reflected on the tragedy’s gravity, underscoring the fragility of life and expressing sorrow for Busch’s young children. Katherine Legge noted the racing community’s loss, labeling Busch as one of the greatest drivers.
