Pope Leo XIV Advocates for Immigrant Rights in Virtual Address

Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of honoring the United States’ tradition of welcoming immigrants during a virtual speech at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. He accepted the 2026 Liberty Medal for his dedication to religious freedom, urging Americans to reflect on the founding principles of the nation.

In his address, Pope Leo highlighted America’s role in providing freedom to successive waves of immigrants. He described the nation’s history as a beacon for freedom, enabling immigrants and their descendants to contribute to shaping the country’s future.

Pope Leo stated, “For the past 250 years, America has stood as a symbol of freedom, welcoming diverse peoples and enabling them to play their part in the nation’s progress.”

Reflecting on the Declaration of Independence, he emphasized fundamental rights, such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These ideals have guided the nation’s development and hold significance as the nation advances.

Pope Leo’s speech coincided with the awarding of the Liberty Medal, which he received during a private audience at the Apostolic Palace. His message called for God’s blessings on America’s future to ensure justice, unity, and peace remain guiding principles.

The Pope also addressed immigrant and migrant rights, a topic he has been vocal about since ascending to the papacy. He urged the nation to remember its identity as “the land of the free and home of the brave” and maintain its commitment to supporting the most vulnerable.

Following his virtual address, Pope Leo traveled to Lampedusa, an Italian island known as a migrant entry point to Europe. He called on Europe to integrate immediate relief efforts into a strategic plan that offers long-term support to migrants.

“Here, you have seen thousands who have suffered at the hands of robbers, beaten, and left to face harsh conditions. This crisis requires not just emergency management, but sustainable policies,” Pope Leo asserted.

During his visit to Lampedusa, the Pope emphasized Europe’s ability to address the migrant crisis comprehensively, advocating for policies that protect and integrate migrants while supporting their countries of origin.

Pope Leo ended his remarks by urging individuals not to view vacation as a distraction from global challenges. He encouraged people to acknowledge the hardships faced by migrants.

“The invisible wall between migrants and vacationers must be dismantled. Think differently and act courageously,” he concluded.

Pope Leo’s views on immigration have sometimes contrasted with those of Western leaders, including former President Donald Trump, who criticized the Pope’s stance on foreign policy.
