Josh Yago of Notre Dame delivered a memorable moment on Memorial Day, before the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse championship began. As the national anthem played, Yago, a graduate transfer from Air Force and a second lieutenant in the U.S. Space Force, stood at attention and saluted, capturing the attention of many in Charlottesville.
This scene quickly went viral, with videos shared widely across social media. “SportsCenter” showcased Yago standing on the Notre Dame sideline, helmet off, saluting as “The Star-Spangled Banner” played.
Yago’s background distinguishes him beyond the typical college athlete. He spent four years at Air Force, excelled as a player, graduated from the academy, and moved to Notre Dame for his final college lacrosse season. Beyond lacrosse, Yago is committed to continuing his service to the country.
The display resonated strongly with American sports fans. Yago, adorned with an American flag patch on his jersey, displayed respect in a moment that many long to witness.
Amidst ongoing debates about athletes, national anthems, and patriotism, Yago’s gesture was a refreshing return to tradition. Unlike others who attract attention during the anthem, Yago’s aim was solely to honor his country.
USA Lacrosse noted that before the game, an Air Force mentor encouraged Yago to “play for those service members” during Memorial Day weekend. Yago expressed a desire to represent his fellow service members from the Air Force and Space Force.
Despite Notre Dame’s loss to Princeton, 16-9, in the championship, Yago’s salute left an indelible mark. His patriotic act before such a crucial game stood out as one of the emblematic images of the day.
