The film industry often leans toward flat lighting and uninspired cinematography, but filmmaker Boots Riley offers a vibrant alternative. His latest creation, “I Love Boosters,” counters this trend with an explosion of color integral to its story.
Centered on a trio of women played by Keke Palmer, Taylour Paige, and Naomi Ackie, the narrative follows their shoplifting adventures in the Bay Area. Their primary target becomes Metro Design stores, owned by the affluent fashion mogul Christie Smith, portrayed by Demi Moore.
Riley expertly melds slapstick antics reminiscent of “Looney Tunes” with sharp social commentary. “I Love Boosters” features layers that invite viewers to revisit the film to grasp all nuances. The storyline oscillates between surreal events and impactful dialogues about class struggles.
The film’s visual appeal is undeniable, with meticulously designed sets and costumes bursting with creativity. Complementing the visual feast is an engaging score by Tune-Yards, with the catchy “Hi-Yo” motif lingering long after the credits roll.
Despite its strengths, some elements fall short. Moore’s performance as the antagonist lacks the exuberance fitting for the film’s tone. Additionally, the humor doesn’t always land as intended, possibly due to the rapid influx of ideas and imagery from Riley.
The conclusion of “I Love Boosters” delivers an uplifting message, a departure from the often grim outcomes typical of social satire. This positive note feels fitting and refreshing given the film’s themes.
Cinematically, few films might match the creative ingenuity seen in “I Love Boosters” this year. Riley’s distinct vision and innovative storytelling make it a fast-paced, enjoyable experience, even if all elements don’t perfectly align.
