Prominent conservatives express concerns about artificial intelligence being influenced by left-leaning media sources. They argue this could undermine public trust in AI as a reliable news source. Known for sometimes generating false information, AI systems face criticism for displaying a liberal bias and minimizing opposing views.
The Media Research Center (MRC), a right-leaning group, conducted studies to evaluate the reliability of chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude. Their findings suggest concern over biases within these technologies. MRC President David Bozell highlighted the presence of media bias in emerging technologies, expressing doubts about their neutrality.
“We’re watching the next phase of media bias unfold in real time,” Bozell commented.
Chatbots from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have been scrutinized for potential biases. ChatGPT, for example, rejected claims of a non-existent assassination of a public figure. Meanwhile, despite evident controversies, these chatbots often emphasize favorable information about certain political figures without mentioning contradictory reports.
Democratic candidate Graham Platner’s past Reddit posts, which contained controversial comments, were not adequately covered by major chatbots when discussing his candidacy. However, these systems highlighted endorsements and other favorable aspects of his campaign.
Concerns extend beyond just the output of these AI systems. The Atlantic signed a deal allowing OpenAI to use its archives, intending to shape AI output according to specific values. The Pew Research Center reported a high reliance on AI by teenagers but noted inaccuracies in AI responses were common.
Further emphasizing this issue, Dan Schneider of MRC’s Free Speech America division stated that research supports claims of ideological leaning within AI outputs. He advocated for AI to remain neutral and free from political bias.
Observers have noted strong connections between chatbot developers and Democratic affiliations. In contrast, Grok, a chatbot led by Elon Musk, is perceived as less biased, offering transparency about its information sources.
A University of Cambridge PhD student shared a personal story highlighting these biases. Malia Marks described how ChatGPT provided career advice based on political alignment when suggesting where to submit her article.
Marks found it concerning that AI systems issued warnings about potential career impacts when engaging with media outlets differing in political alignment. These instances fuel the ongoing debate about AI’s role and influence in media.
