Alimber Santa Makes Stunning Major League Debut with a Combined No-Hitter

4 weeks ago 0

Beginning a career in Major League Baseball is daunting, but pitching during a no-hitter adds another layer of pressure. Houston Astros pitcher Alimber Santa faced this unique challenge during his debut. The team triumphed over the Texas Rangers with a 9-0 victory on a Monday night at Globe Life Field.

Historic Debut

In this game, Tatsuya Imai began the night with six no-hit innings, supported by reliever Steven Okert, who managed another inning without allowing a hit. Manager Joe Espada then handed the ball to Santa, who delivered two flawless innings. Santa concluded the game by striking out Brandon Nimmo, marking his first major league strikeout and completing the combined no-hitter. It marked the first time since 1900 that a pitcher contributed to a no-hitter in his MLB debut, as confirmed by the Elias Sports Bureau.

The bullpen was filled with anticipation. Santa, aware of the situation, said through a translator, “I felt the adrenaline. I knew about the no-hitter and focused on staying calm.” Espada expressed his pride in Santa’s achievement, stating, “I am proud of Santa. This is a significant night for him and his family. It’s a huge moment for him and the organization.”

Astounding Achievement

This achievement marked the Astros’ 17th regular-season no-hitter, totaling 18 when including the postseason. The team had previously executed a combined no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2022 World Series. The most recent no-hitter before this was executed by Shota Imanaga and two Chicago Cubs relievers against the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 4, 2024. No pitcher has thrown a complete-game no-hitter since Blake Snell achieved this for the San Francisco Giants against the Cincinnati Reds on August 2, 2024.

Ronel Blanco delivered the Astros’ preceding no-hitter in a 10-0 triumph against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 1, 2024, which was also Espada’s debut managerial win. Houston has achieved three of the last seven and five of the last eleven major league no-hitters.

Looking Ahead

The Astros, currently standing at 24-31, aim to continue their success against the Rangers, who hold a record of 24-29, in the second game of a four-game series scheduled for Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. ET.
