The San Antonio Spurs have pushed the Oklahoma City Thunder to a decisive Game 7 in the NBA’s Western Conference Finals. San Antonio dominated Game 6, clinching a 118-91 victory at home on Thursday, May 28.
Oklahoma City had a strong start to the postseason, sweeping their first two series. However, they encountered difficulty against a familiar foe, the Spurs, who had bested them in four of five encounters during the regular season. A notable win by the Spurs came with a 117-102 triumph on Christmas Day.
Victor Wembanyama led San Antonio’s charge with an impressive double-double, scoring 28 points and securing 10 rebounds. His performance included shooting 10-for-21 from the field and 4-for-9 from the three-point line within 28 minutes.
“We played together and passed the ball,” Wembanyama remarked. “We trusted the game plan as always.”
The Spurs were particularly strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Thunder 32-13, including a crucial 20-0 run. Wembanyama emphasized the need for defensive consistency, recognizing the improbability of repeating such a run but stressing consistent performance.
Defensively, Wembanyama was pivotal, contributing three of the team’s seven blocks. Stephon Castle also made a significant defensive impact, effectively challenging Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder’s star who struggled throughout the game. Gilgeous-Alexander managed only 15 points, making 6-of-18 field goals and 0-for-5 three-pointers in 28 minutes.
“A lot of the shots I’m shooting I’ve taken plenty of times before and felt good,” Gilgeous-Alexander noted. “They’re just not going in. It’s too late in the season to abandon my shooting style now.”
Despite having the home-court advantage, Gilgeous-Alexander acknowledged that overcoming the determined Spurs will involve more than venue benefits.
“We are a motivated group and accept the challenge ahead,” he commented. “Anything can happen in a Game 7. It’s win or go home. Playing in your building is nice but doesn’t really mean anything. You have to be the better basketball team.”
The decisive Game 7 will see the Thunder host the Spurs at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. The game is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, at 8 p.m. ET, and will be available on NBC and streamed on Peacock.
