Madelyn Cummins, a senior midfielder from Lake Forest, excels in high-pressure playoff scenarios. Having started for four years, she previously propelled the Scouts to a Class 2A supersectional as a freshman. This experience proved invaluable during the Class 2A Lake Zurich Sectional championship on Friday when Cummins received a penalty kick opportunity in the second half of a scoreless game.
Cummins commented on her preparation, saying, “We’ve been practicing penalty kicks extensively, so I felt well-prepared. Losing in regionals on penalty kicks last year taught me to handle the pressure. It’s uncomfortable to step up for one, but necessary to win the game.”
She successfully converted the penalty in the 55th minute, leading the third-seeded Scouts to a 1-0 triumph over fifth-seeded Lake Zurich. With this win, Lake Forest (15-7) will face Crystal Lake Central (19-2) in the Lake Zurich Supersectional at 6 p.m. on Monday. This matchup is particularly significant because Crystal Lake Central defeated the Scouts in the 2023 supersectional.
In the match, Cummins demonstrated her game-changing skills. Her 14th goal of the season was a decisive shot to the upper-left corner, which Lake Zurich’s senior goalkeeper, Kelly Nelson, touched but couldn’t stop. Despite a later incident where Cummins was hit in the nose and had to exit the game, she felt ready and motivated for the penalty kick.
Coach Ty Stuckslager expressed confidence in Cummins, stating, “Maddy is a competitor with deceptive speed and excellent touch. She understands what is required in critical moments and exuded composure toward the game’s conclusion.”
