The Trump administration has implemented a strategy aimed at pressuring immigrants, even those with legal status, to voluntarily leave the United States. This plan involves economic pressures and was observed when a man and child left the Annandale Immigration Court in Annandale, Virginia.
Raquel Molina, a 65-year-old immigrant from El Salvador who legally worked at Boston’s Logan International Airport for nearly three decades, exemplifies the impact of this policy. Despite having a valid Social Security number, she was unexpectedly fired from her $19.75-per-hour job. Her termination was based on new access restrictions at the airport, which now favors U.S. citizens, green card holders, and individuals with more permanent residency. This change is part of a lawsuit filed by a labor union against the administration.
“I didn’t understand what was going on,” said Ms. Molina, who has lived legally in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status. She expressed shock at losing her job after years of hard work.
This action is part of a broader move by President Trump’s administration to create a less welcoming environment for foreigners. Over the past year, officials have worked to reduce immigrants’ access to jobs, medical care, financial services, tax credits, and child daycare. The overarching aim is to discourage immigration by removing incentives and forcing current residents to leave.
The initiative highlights the president’s ability to alter immigration policy through executive orders and federal regulations, avoiding Congress. It illustrates the use of less overt tactics after the backlash from earlier deportation raids in major cities.
