Memphis is experiencing a significant drop in violent crime, with data from the Memphis Police Department revealing a reduction of over 40% in 2026 compared to the previous year. This change follows the creation of the Memphis Safe Task Force, established under former President Donald Trump. The task force combines efforts from local, state, federal law enforcement agencies, and the Tennessee National Guard.
Crime Statistics and Improvements
The decrease in crime rates in Memphis has been notable:
- Overall violent crime: down 40.52%
- Aggravated assault: down 28.14%
- Arson: down 33.33%
- Burglary: down 28.06%
- Homicide: down 36%
- Larceny: down 39.07%
- Motor vehicle theft: down 63.98%
- Robbery: down 44.96%
- Sexual assault: down 27.43%
Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith, National Police Association spokesperson, praised the city’s efforts, suggesting that Memphis’ approach could be a template for other cities dealing with high crime rates. She highlighted the collaboration between various law enforcement levels and judicial cooperation as key factors in the success.
Task Force Impact
Since its inception, the Memphis Safe Task Force has led to over 7,400 arrests related to serious offenses, including homicides, sexual crimes, gang activities, and drug trafficking, according to the White House. Additionally, 1,219 illegal weapons have been confiscated, and 150 missing children have been found.
“The results are undeniable — proof that strong leadership, tough enforcement, and zero tolerance for criminals deliver real public safety and transform communities,” a White House press release stated.
Local residents, such as Bobby Hardin, have noticed the change. Hardin commented on the positive shift, noting the city feels safer than it has in recent years.
Law Enforcement’s Role
The visible presence of law enforcement is a significant factor in deterring crime, according to Smith. The sight of officers making arrests and ensuring offenders are jailed sends a strong message that crime will not go unpunished. She also noted a similar trend in Washington, D.C., where the presence of the National Guard has contributed to a decrease in crime.
In Washington, D.C., data from the Metropolitan Police Department shows a 5% drop in violent crime in 2026 compared to the previous year. The deployment of the National Guard in the capital has coincided with a remarkable 53% reduction in homicides.
