St. Charles North’s baseball team faced a challenging situation this spring. Their top two pitchers were out, with Keaton Reinke graduating early and Matt Ritchie injured. This left Ben Auer to take on the role of the team’s ace. As the season progressed, Auer solidified his position as the leading pitcher.
Auer embraced this challenge and his confidence grew with each game. In the Class 4A St. Charles North Regional championship game against South Elgin, he demonstrated his abilities by striking out seven batters, allowing five hits and one run over five innings. St. Charles North defeated South Elgin 3-2 to claim their 11th regional title.
Auer also excelled as a batter, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Ty Gleason contributed with two hits, including a double. Reed Raczka added a triple and scored twice, while Josh Kobylinski secured the save by retiring the final five batters. St. Charles North (22-12-1) will advance to face Huntley (30-7) in the McHenry Sectional semifinals.
South Elgin’s pitcher, Zacharia Barkho, matched Auer’s performance with seven strikeouts over six innings. He conceded two earned runs on seven hits and a walk. Alex Muro contributed two hits and an RBI for South Elgin (24-13).
Despite having limited pitching experience last season, St. Charles North coach Todd Genke always had faith in Auer. Over time, Auer emerged as the undeniable ace of the team. “He stepped up big time,” Genke noted, adding that Auer’s leadership united the team. Kobylinski echoed this sentiment, explaining that Auer’s role allowed others to find their positions within the team.
In the game against South Elgin, Auer maintained a low pitch count, effectively stranding runners early on. Although South Elgin brought the score to 3-1 in the fifth inning, Auer delivered a crucial strikeout to retain control before turning to the bullpen.
Kobylinski, a reliable pitcher throughout the series, closed the game confidently. “Koby has been good all year,” Auer commented, expressing trust in his fellow pitcher.
South Elgin coach David Palmer praised his team’s perseverance despite being behind. “We expected a tough playoff game, and that’s what we got,” Palmer said.
The victory also held personal significance for Auer, as St. Charles North sought to avenge last year’s loss to South Elgin. “There was a little extra in this one,” Auer revealed. The team looks forward to continuing their playoff run.
