Carson Holmes: A Key Player for Libertyville Wildcats

3 weeks ago 0

Carson Holmes, senior left fielder for Libertyville’s Wildcats, plays a crucial role as one of the team’s key returning players. As the team aims to defend its Class 4A state championship title, Holmes’s experience provides valuable guidance to less experienced teammates. He views this responsibility as essential. “You want to be that guy when the time comes,” Holmes explained. “We’re going to face tough games ahead. When challenges arise, we must rally together. I’ll reassure the team that I have their back, and everyone supports one another. That’s our motto. It’s about battling together.”

Batting third in Libertyville’s lineup, the 6-foot, 195-pound Holmes often finds himself at the center of the team’s efforts. During a recent Class 4A Hoffman Estates Regional championship game, Holmes reached base four times, helping the top-seeded Wildcats defeat eighth-seeded Stevenson 13-3. Libertyville pitcher Chase Lockwood, an Illinois State recruit, pitched four scoreless innings, contributing to the team’s success. The Wildcats, with a record of 26-10-1, are set to play against fourth-seeded Mundelein in the Libertyville Sectional semifinals.

The regional championship witnessed a dynamic third inning where the Wildcats scored nine runs thanks to seven walks, three hit batters, and an error. Holmes recorded the only hit with a two-run single. Reflecting on the game, he said, “I saw a good pitch, swung, and connected well. We pressured the pitcher, who struggled to adjust, while we remained composed and focused.” Holmes’ patience at the plate resulted in him also being hit by a pitch and taking two walks during the game.

Last season, Holmes exhibited an impressive .500 batting average across seven postseason games, highlighted by a home run in the regional final. Libertyville coach Matt Thompson remarked, “We hope Carson will excel again. He has a great swing and solid hands. Batting third isn’t easy, but we have full confidence in him.” With the graduation of three Division I recruits, the team has adjusted its lineup around him, anticipating his role as an offensive catalyst.

This year, Holmes is hitting .276 with two home runs and 23 RBIs. Despite past fluctuations, he remains determined. “I have experienced ups and downs, but I keep a positive mindset, focusing on the next game and pitch,” Holmes said. “While personal performance is important, success as a team is what matters most.” Holmes understands his responsibilities extend beyond batting. Teammate Jack Cenar highlighted Holmes’s leadership, especially in the outfield. “He consistently communicates and helps us make the right plays. He’s essential for the team,” Cenar mentioned.

Holmes, also a two-way starter for Libertyville’s football team, expresses immense enthusiasm for baseball. “Playing baseball is undoubtedly the best time of the year,” Holmes shared. “Winning regionals is the expectation, and now we’re ready to step up for the next challenge.”
