St. Charles East’s pitcher, Hannah Wulf, delivered an impressive performance, nearly achieving a no-hitter through five innings. Her stats included eight strikeouts, while handling numerous runners. Despite hitting four batters and allowing two walks, Wulf maintained control to secure a 1-0 win against Fremd in the Class 4A Bartlett Sectional championship.
Wulf, a future South Carolina player, was unaware of her no-hit performance until it ended. “I try not to think about a no-hitter during the game to avoid jinxing it,” she shared.
Coach Jarod Gutesha commended Wulf’s clutch performance, stating, “She came through when needed, providing a great game under tough conditions.” Both Wulf and Fremd’s pitcher, Molly Kanupke, faced a tight strike zone. Kanupke managed six strikeouts, five hits, and three walks for Fremd.
St. Charles East catcher, Hayden Sujack, played a key role by assisting Wulf throughout the game. Sujack, who also committed to South Carolina, walked twice and hit a vital single in the sixth inning. This allowed Morgan Beers to advance and eventually score the winning run due to an error by Fremd’s first baseman.
Fremd failed to capitalize on several opportunities, leaving seven runners stranded. Wulf’s biggest challenge came in the fifth inning, but she maintained her composure, striking out three consecutive batters after allowing a single hit.
Despite some control issues, including 26 walks and hitting 17 batters this season, Wulf’s pitches, like her curveball, were effective against opponents. Sujack attested to Wulf’s technique, noting, “Her inside pitches are effective, even if they result in some hit batters. Her curve is especially tricky for hitters.”
Looking ahead, St. Charles East will face Marist, a strong opponent they previously lost to in a nonconference game. Wulf expressed her eagerness, acknowledging Marist’s strength, but remained optimistic about the upcoming matchup.
