Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi recently faced a setback following surgery, bringing his NHL career to a temporary halt. On May 25, the Maple Leafs revealed that Domi underwent an operation to repair an issue he endured during the 2025-26 season. While the team did not specify the procedure type, they stated Domi would be sidelined indefinitely due to resulting complications.
The announcement came unexpectedly during the team’s offseason, particularly since Domi had appeared in 80 games for the Leafs in the previous season. A new report suggests Domi is dealing with significant challenges following the procedure.
The Toronto Sun disclosed that Domi had back surgery, and days after the procedure, he experienced an inability to walk. This alarming situation has cast doubt on his availability for the upcoming season.
According to reports, Domi elected to have his surgery performed by a surgeon of his choice rather than the one the Leafs recommended. Such a decision is not rare in professional sports.
Steve Simmons remarked, “Whatever happened here wasn’t deemed successful. Apparently, Domi could not walk in the days following surgery, which created significant alarm. His status remains uncertain for the coming season.”
Domi, who joined the Maple Leafs as a free agent before the 2023 season, has been an integral part of the lineup. He has played at least 74 games in each of his three seasons with the team. In the last season, he scored 12 goals and accumulated 36 points over 80 games.
Domi, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, reached a career-high of 72 points in the 2018-19 season with the Montreal Canadiens. His ability to contribute on the ice remains uncertain as he navigates this recovery period.
