A fireworks display without permission in Rome caused a chaotic stampede among horses, wounding multiple riders and animals during a nighttime rehearsal for Italy’s Republic Day parade. The incident happened late Friday near the historic Baths of Caracalla as Italy’s military and police units prepared for the June 2 national celebration, as reported by Reuters.
Around 35 horses sprinted through the city after the unexpected fireworks display. Videos captured the chaotic scenes with horses seen racing on Via Cristoforo Colombo while drivers filmed the event. The search for the horses continued until dawn, with the last one found approximately nine miles from the initial scene.

Reports indicate the loud noises began shortly before 11:30 p.m., creating panic among the ceremonial horses, many escorted by Italy’s Army, Carabinieri, and state police. Some riders were on horseback, while others led horses by hand when the animals broke loose.
During the mayhem, a 22-year-old soldier suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, though his injuries were not life-threatening. At least 15 horses also sustained injuries but none needed euthanization.

The Italian agency ANSA reported that three young soldiers from the Montebello Lancers and a 29-year-old policewoman were also injured. Officials are investigating how the unauthorized fireworks were set off near the rehearsal area.
The Rome Local Police Command stated that four traffic police officers were involved, reportedly near the firecrackers when they exploded. One officer allegedly ignited a battery of fireworks around 200 yards from the horses. The officer is identified as a 50-year-old joined the force following the most recent exam. Video footage and witness accounts show the explosions and the horses’ escape occurred simultaneously.

The Rome police commander, Mario De Sclavis, told Corriere della Sera that the incident “discredits the image of the Corps and its officers” as reported by Reuters. Sclavis added that steps will be taken to hold those responsible accountable according to ANSA. “Last night’s events hit us like a tsunami,” he stated.
