A.J. Brown Trade Highlights Tensions Between Former Eagles Teammates

After an uneven 2025 season, the Philadelphia Eagles made a significant trade. They sent star receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots in exchange for future draft picks. This move followed signs of a rift between Brown and quarterback Jalen Hurts.

More than two months have passed since the trade, but questions about Brown and Hurts’ relationship persist. During joint practices with the Eagles, Brown was asked if he had spoken to Hurts since the trade. His one-word response was, “No.”

Hurts, who typically avoids discussing his relationship with Brown, addressed the topic in a GQ interview. He acknowledged the change, saying, “There’s no surprise that it was talked about.” Hurts, the MVP of Super Bowl LIX, confirmed Brown’s previous comments, noting, “I mean, clearly.”

Brown had stated in June that no specific incident caused their split. He explained that life circumstances caused them to drift apart and both parties accepted this change. While attending joint practices in Massachusetts, Brown and Hurts were seen catching up.

Brown expressed his preference to keep things positive. He stated, “Honestly, guys, none of that stuff even matters, man. You all should want to report something positive.” Hurts echoed similar sentiments, stating his ongoing affection for Brown.

Brown left a lasting impact on the Eagles, holding the two highest single-season receiving yardage records. Philadelphia secured its second Vince Lombardi Trophy during his tenure, despite interpersonal challenges.

In January, following a playoff exit against the San Francisco 49ers, Brown sought a new opportunity. According to sources, Brown’s dissatisfaction involved his role in the offense, especially regarding zone coverage targeting. However, Brown credited Philadelphia for his Super Bowl victory.

On his new team, Brown focuses on future success. “It’s love. I won a Super Bowl ring with them. It will always be love no matter how anyone feels. I love Philly and I will always love Philly, but I’m here now,” Brown remarked.

The Eagles begin the 2026 season on September 13 against the Washington Commanders. The Patriots face the Seattle Seahawks on September 9 to kick off their season.
