Judi Dench attended the “Allelujah” European Premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9, 2022. In an excerpt from her upcoming memoir, “Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It?,” the 91-year-old actress criticized the use of trigger warnings in theaters and movies, expressing her views to The Times.
Dench described trigger warnings as “mollycoddling,” stating they have extended beyond essential alerts like age limits or sound effects. She emphasized that excessive warnings might dilute the essence of storytelling and lessen audience enjoyment.
By all means, keep the warnings about strobe lighting and gunshots, and obviously there should be age limits for children, but that’s about it. Otherwise, where will it end?
Dench humorously noted that trigger warnings for plays like “Titus Andronicus” could be longer than the performance. She questioned whether such warnings spoil the experience, comparing them to revealing a mystery’s conclusion prematurely.
She argued that the theater and cinema should challenge, excite, and provoke audiences, taking them out of their comfort zone. Dench also pointed out the unpredictability of triggers, using examples like clowns or even bananas as potential triggers.
In a similar 2024 interview, she acknowledged some reasons for warnings but suggested those too sensitive might avoid the theater altogether.
I can see why they exist, and it is preparing people, I suppose. But if you’re that sensitive, don’t go to the theater because you could be very shocked.
Christian Toto, a film critic and host of the “Hollywood in Toto” podcast, supported Dench’s perspective. He called her comments “obvious” but necessary in today’s context, praising the clarity and wisdom of her statements.
Dench’s remarks highlight ongoing debates about the role of trigger warnings in arts and entertainment. Her insights add to discussions on how art continues to challenge and engage audiences.
