A New Era in Slovenian Politics: Janez Janša’s Fourth Term

Škofja Loka, Slovenia – The Republic of Slovenia, noted for being the birthplace of Melania Trump and LA Lakers star Luka Dončić, is witnessing significant political changes with the appointment of its larger-than-life prime minister, Janez Janša. In his fourth term, Janša formed a coalition that replaced the country’s previous leader, Robert Golob.

Janša is initiating policies that remind many of former President Trump’s approach. He reversed Golob’s anti-Israel stance, planning to move Slovenia’s embassy to Jerusalem, halting recognition of a Palestinian state, and repealing a ban on military trade with Israel.

Janša supports strong relations with the U.S. During an event hosted by the U.S Embassy in Ljubljana – attended by Melania Trump’s father Viktor Knavs – Janša highlighted the U.S. as a beacon of Slovenian independence. He expressed a vision of Slovenia becoming a land of bravery and freedom.

At the domestic level, Janša aims to address what he terms as inefficiencies of the Golob administration, transforming Slovenia into a nation of opportunity and justice. His plans include reversing anti-business policies, reducing government bureaucracy, promoting private education and healthcare, reforming pensions, diminishing government size, and investing in infrastructure, such as adding a reactor to Slovenia’s Krško nuclear plant.

Though Janša had policy differences, he was an ally of former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He supports Ukraine, traveling to Kyiv during his previous term as part of EU solidarity against Russia, and revisited for Ukraine Statehood Day during the Southeast Europe Summit.

His stance includes bolstering military assistance to Ukraine and increasing sanctions on Russia. Janša shares Orbán’s anti-immigrant views, notably during Europe’s migration crisis in 2015. He endorses several of Trump’s immigration policies. While no reforms have passed Slovenian parliament yet, Janša joined other EU leaders in advocating a significant shift toward reducing irregular migration, enhancing deportations, and curbing human smuggling.

Critics label Janša as a threat to Slovenia’s sovereignty. His active social media presence involves political commentaries and confrontations with media, accused of undermining independence.

Janša’s legal history includes imprisonment following convictions he felt were politically motivated. Despite electoral losses, Janša has secured his current term, akin to winning through an electoral college despite losing a popular vote.

In recent elections, Golob’s Gibanje Svoboda party initially seemed set for victory, but Janša’s party narrowly missed first place. Janša’s coalition-building skills secured him 51 parliamentary votes, allowing him to become prime minister once again.

His political career traces back to Slovenia’s independence, notably the “JBTZ affair” where he faced military court trials and was imprisoned. His contributions extended to forming opposition parties and serving as defence minister in Slovenia’s war of independence.

In 2013, Janša faced legal challenges from bribery allegations, leading to imprisonment. However, his conviction was overturned. Janša is expected to visit the U.S. to address the United Nations General Assembly.
