ABC News recently added corrections and an editor’s note to a previously deleted report on business activities of Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. The original report, which focused on 1789 Capital’s stake in Anduril, faced scrutiny over its accuracy.
The initial report titled, “Trump sons’ investments have won billions in Pentagon contracts since his election,” was removed shortly after publication without explaining the decision. However, the revised report reappeared with a new headline: “New shipyard announced amid earlier Democratic concerns about potential conflicts of interest.” The revised version included factual corrections and an editor’s note.
Editor’s Note: CORRECTION: A version of this story published on Oct. 7 contained errors in the description of certain company investments, government contracts and event chronologies,” the statement read. “After subsequent reporting, this version contains corrected information and additional context regarding some of those investments, contracts and events.
The alterations followed criticism from Alexa Henning, spokesperson for 1789 Capital, who contested the original description of the firm’s investments. Henning clarified that 1789 Capital does not possess a ‘major stake’ in Anduril as previously reported. The original article had incorrectly linked a $2.5 billion investment to 1789 Capital, which was actually Anduril’s total funding for the previous year.
Donald Trump Jr. is a partner in 1789 Capital, though he is not part of the investment decision committee. The corrected version states that 1789 Capital invested $50 million in Anduril, a defense contractor valued at approximately $60 billion.
ABC News faced criticism from figures like Bill Ackman for the handling of the article’s retraction, who called for the network to uphold journalistic ethics by clearly acknowledging errors. The initial withdrawal became a talking point for Trump Jr., who used it to taunt political adversaries.
Neither ABC News, Trump Jr., nor 1789 Capital provided comments on the revised report. Media and culture writer Julia Bonavita from Fox News Digital reported on these updates.
