Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed called Hasan Piker’s 9/11 remarks “dumb” while discussing the U.S. Senate race on “Meet the Press” with NBC’s Kristen Welker. Although El-Sayed had campaigned with Piker before and Piker had urged punishment for Democrats opposing El-Sayed, the candidate focused on challenging Republican candidate Mike Rogers.
When questioned about Piker’s comments, which suggested America deserved 9/11, El-Sayed agreed with Sen. Bernie Sanders’ previous statement labeling the remarks dumb. He noted that Piker disavowed the comments and criticized the perpetuation of cancel culture politics.
Sanders had addressed the issue by acknowledging Piker’s widespread influence while dismissing his statement. Sanders emphasized the need to move past cancel culture, highlighting that people often make regrettable statements during extended public discussions.
Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist and author, remarked that El-Sayed’s invocation of cancel culture seemed like an avoidance tactic. Alpert asserted that people are entitled to question why El-Sayed maintained ties with Piker despite disavowing his comments, arguing that tough questions about associations do not equate to cancel culture.
Alpert further interpreted El-Sayed’s response as a strategic move to shift focus from valid criticism by presenting himself as a victim of unfair scrutiny. This tactic is commonly observed among politicians.
