During his address, President Trump made two notable threats. He suggested the use of military force in Latin America to serve U.S. interests. Additionally, he spoke of the potential annihilation of both the Iranian government and its citizens. These declarations are problematic due to their direct contravention of international laws. International law explicitly prohibits the use of force and is designed to protect civilians during conflicts.

The U.N. Charter explicitly forbids threats of aggression. In addition, the laws of war, which are part of U.S. law, prohibit making indiscriminate threats against civilian populations. As such, President Trump’s public contemplation of which nations to invade or annihilate borders on criminal activity. These statements were made openly in the presence of thousands of diplomats and international leaders, raising serious concerns.
