Notable figures like Steve Cohen, Eric Yuan, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk have shared their optimistic forecasts—ranging from a four-day workweek to a scenario where work resembles a casual hobby.
However, reality paints a different picture. While these executives could have shortened the workweek earlier, the prospect remains elusive.
Iceland’s Successful Trial
Historical data shows that a four-day workweek could work. A 2015 trial in Iceland demonstrated that productivity either remained constant or improved. Employee satisfaction increased significantly, prompting the model’s expansion throughout the country.
Global Experiments and Results
In 2022, a study conducted in Britain, involving 61 companies and nearly 3,000 employees, revealed similar positive outcomes. Revenue increased, while employee stress and burnout decreased. Other nations such as New Zealand, Japan, Australia, and Brazil have also experienced success with similar trials.
Challenges in the U.S.
Despite widespread support among Americans for a four-day workweek, the concept has struggled to gain traction. Over four decades working as a journalist and editor, numerous expert predictions about workplace trends have failed to materialize.

The prevailing issue is executives’ focus on in-person work. Elon Musk, for instance, mandates a minimum of 40 office hours and claims that achieving impact requires 80 or more weekly hours. Jensen Huang, who also suggests the possibility of a four-day workweek, reportedly works every day of the week.
Misjudged Technology Impact
Predictions about technology saving time have proven inaccurate. Technological advancements have often led to increased work hours. During the 1980s, manual typewriters were used for writing, requiring manual error fixes and publishing methods. With digital tools, work hours expanded rather than contracted due to constant publishing capabilities.
