Air Force One Swap at NATO Summit Raises Security Concerns

Air Force One remained on the tarmac as President Donald Trump prepared to depart from Ankara following a NATO summit. The choice of aircraft was unexpected. Trump had flown to Turkey on a newly retrofitted jet, gifted by Qatar, painted in striking red, white, and navy blue. However, he left for home on an older model with a distinctive baby blue exterior. This decision stirred questions, especially as tensions flared with Iran. Trump simply stated he chose the older aircraft “for old time’s sake” and mentioned an unscheduled stop at Royal Air Force Mildenhall as part of the return journey.

The decision to use the older aircraft intensified scrutiny over the new jet, which cost the U.S. $400 million to retrofit. Observers noted the plane lacked some vital missile detection and countermeasure systems that the legacy jets possessed. Images of the new Qatari-gifted aircraft showed this equipment was missing.

Upon arriving at Mildenhall, Trump switched to the new jet. He took the opportunity to greet U.S. service members present at the base. Trump’s social media remarks highlighted the military members’ excitement about seeing the new aircraft, claiming the stop was on their way back to the U.S. without affecting the flight path significantly.

During the flight discussions, Trump denied that the swap was due to security concerns with Iran. When asked about potential threats to Air Force One, Trump acknowledged constant threats but downplayed any specific danger. He asserted, “I’m No. 1 on their list,” stating Iran views him as a top target.

Reporters aboard the older Air Force One noted being instructed to keep window blinds closed during the flight to the U.K. Trump addressed this, attributing it to potential threats posed by Iran. He remarked about “sleazebags over here,” suggesting that the risks were not insignificant.

The change in aircraft unfolded shortly after U.S. military actions in Iran in response to its attacks on merchant shipping. Trump later explained on social media that the stop at the U.K. base allowed troops to tour the new plane. He opted to fly the older aircraft and used the opportunity to conduct a press briefing.

When queried about the missing security systems on the new aircraft, the U.S. Air Force directed inquiries to the White House. Air Force spokesperson Steven Cheung emphasized that the plane had top-tier safety protocols. Cheung acknowledged the threats against the President and outlined how strategic measures are applied to counter them.

Reports indicated the older aircraft used during this journey had its transponder temporarily disabled, hindering tracking capabilities. This measure typically occurs when transporting the President through high-risk areas. Other world leaders’ flights stayed trackable, such as those from Germany and the U.K.

The Qatari jet left Turkey ahead of Trump’s older Boeing VC-25A plane and landed at RAF Mildenhall. Iran’s arsenal includes drones and missiles reaching Turkey but not England, located at about 2,500 miles away. The U.S. Air Force stated they had made selective upgrades to the Qatari jet but emphasized no compromise on safety or secure communications had been made.

Aviation analyst Jeremiah Gertler mentioned the Qatari jet seemed more appropriate for domestic flights due to the absence of certain security systems and fewer communication antennas. Previously, Trump took this new plane on a trip to North Dakota.

Initially built towards the Cold War’s end, the original Air Force One jets came equipped with advanced security features such as anti-missile countermeasures, a nuclear-blast-resistant build, and even an onboard operating room. The current Boeing jets slated for Air Force One updates face delays and now aim for delivery by 2028.
