A’ja Wilson expanded her remarkable basketball achievements on Thursday by becoming the first player in WNBA history to win five MVP awards. The standout athlete from the Las Vegas Aces secured her third consecutive MVP trophy, making it four in the last five years, setting a new standard in the league.
Coach Becky Hammon praises Wilson’s impact on the game. She asserts that Wilson’s impressive record already places her among basketball’s greatest talents. Wilson’s credentials include a WNBA championship and an NCAA Division I national championship with South Carolina.
During a news conference prior to Game 1 of the 2024 WNBA Playoffs, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert presented Wilson with the 2024 MVP award at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Wilson received nearly all the first-place votes.
Hammon noted, “Talent alone doesn’t lead to the level of success Wilson has attained.” Her abilities have translated into impressive team and personal achievements, which spotlight her dominance on the court.
While Wilson’s season might not have been her statistical best, she was decisive. She led the WNBA with 26.2 points per game and topped the league with 79 blocks. She also ranked among the top rebounders, highlighting her all-around skills.
Former WNBA greats like Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson have multiple MVP awards. However, Wilson’s fourth MVP in 2025 placed her ahead of them in league history, surpassing the records they set during the 2000s.
In comparison to the NBA, only Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Michael Jordan have secured at least five MVP titles. Wilson joins this exclusive group of basketball legends, demonstrating her elite stature.
Reflecting on her achievements, Wilson expressed, “Setting standards and etching your name into history means a lot.” Her achievements offer targets for future generations, and she cherishes sharing these milestones with diverse audiences.
Wilson’s MVP campaign saw Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles finish second, while Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell took third place. Despite the competition, Wilson’s dominance remained clear.
Currently, Wilson aims to lead the Aces past the Golden State Valkyries in the playoffs. Facing a 2-0 series deficit, the Aces look to Wilson for a historic comeback, which would further solidify her legendary status. The challenging Game 3 takes the spotlight as it moves to Las Vegas.
