Alanis Morissette Recalls Hostility in the Wake of Jagged Little Pill Success

Alanis Morissette emerged as a major music star with her album “Jagged Little Pill.” However, this success brought with it a wave of hostility, including websites dedicated to plotting her murder. Morissette rose to fame following the release of her 1995 album and shared her experiences on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. She faced death threats and criticism from fellow musicians.

Reflecting on the response to her lead single “You Oughta Know,” Morissette described a mix of terror and resistance. She revealed the extent of the backlash she faced, which went beyond criticism of her music or personality. As her fame grew, so did the hostility, reaching alarming levels. “There was a lot of hate,” Morissette told host Alex Cooper. “Websites were constructed to figure out how to murder me most elegantly.”

The criticism was particularly hurtful when it came from fellow artists she admired. Musicians like Courtney Love were among her vocal critics at the time. However, Morissette recounted how some, like Sinéad O’Connor, later apologized, noting that Sinéad’s apology was “classy.” Courtney Love also later expressed kind words after initial criticism.

Decades later, Morissette views the reaction through a different perspective. She compares the resentment she faced to jealousy surrounding contemporary artists like Taylor Swift. She argues that women were made to feel there could only be one leading figure. “They were upset. It’s like people being jealous of Taylor Swift,” she explained, highlighting a scarcity mindset influenced by patriarchal thinking.

Morissette’s career began at a young age, including a role on the Canadian children’s television series “You Can’t Do That on Television.” Initially successful as a dance-pop singer in Canada, her career took a new path with “Jagged Little Pill.” The album topped the Billboard 200 chart and established her as an international star.

“Jagged Little Pill” earned Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. The song “You Oughta Know” won Best Rock Song and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Morissette was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2026.
