4 days ago 0

In Seattle, Alex Freeman is making a name for himself in soccer, following the footsteps of his father, Super Bowl champion Antonio Freeman. The younger Freeman scored a crucial header in the United States’ 2-0 victory against Australia in the World Cup. At 21, he is the youngest starter on the U.S. team and this marks his third international goal.

The decisive moment came in the 43rd minute with the U.S. already leading 1-0. Antonee Robinson delivered a free kick to Sergiño Dest whose shot, deflected by an Australian defender, soared into the air. Freeman rose high to connect with the ball, heading it past Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach, ensuring the goal stood after a brief replay review.

“He deserves it,” said U.S. defender Chris Richards. “He’s had a great tournament and an impressive progression over the past year.”

Freeman reflected on the achievement as a significant family milestone, acknowledging his father’s influence. “It shows the strength of our family. My dad’s success has inspired me in moments like these.” Antonio Freeman, a former NFL player mainly with the Green Bay Packers, is known for his exploits alongside Brett Favre, including a memorable Super Bowl victory.

Alex Freeman has worked hard for his spot on the U.S. roster. Initially playing for Orlando City in Major League Soccer, he faced competition for a place on the team. In January, he moved to the Spanish club Villarreal, accepting a smaller role to enhance his skills. His standout performance came during a match against Uruguay where he scored two goals.

“He’s humble and eager to learn,” said U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino. “He’s an amazing player and a wonderful person to be around.”

Freeman has also shown his capabilities in the World Cup by playing full minutes in a victory over Paraguay, assisting on an extra-time goal. Teammate Folarin Balogun expressed confidence in Freeman’s future. “As long as he continues developing and performing on the big stage, his future looks promising.”
