American Scientist Detained in China for Alleged Spying

An American seismologist, Youlin Chen, has been detained in China under accusations of spying, according to his family and supporters. Chen, who is a researcher involved in U.S. governmental projects concerning North Korean nuclear tests, was seized by Chinese security officials at a Beijing airport in 2024.

Chen’s detention, which has lasted for nearly two years, underscores the dangers facing scientists and researchers involved in sensitive areas, especially those with ties to China. China’s security services have increasingly targeted individuals suspected of espionage or subversion under the leadership of Xi Jinping.

Dr. Chen, originally from China, was apprehended when he was about to travel back to his home in Boston. His family has been speaking out, aiming to draw international attention to his plight in hopes of pressuring Chinese authorities to release him. They contend that the accusations are baseless and linked to his professional work.

Efforts to secure Dr. Chen’s freedom include political intervention by former President Donald Trump, who raised the issue with Xi Jinping during a meeting in Beijing in May and again at an upcoming summit in Washington in September. Dr. Chen’s wife, Yufang Rong, expressed optimism that the Chinese leadership could recognize and rectify this situation.

The case of Dr. Chen is not isolated. Just last month, Chinese authorities detained an American scholar focused on Myanmar politics, also accusing him of espionage. These actions form part of broader tensions between the U.S. and China amidst trade conflicts and security concerns.
