Amtrak Resumes Service Between New York and Philadelphia After Fires Near Tracks

1 month ago 0

Amtrak service between New York and Philadelphia resumed on Wednesday afternoon. The service was initially halted due to two fires near the tracks in North Philadelphia. Amtrak Northeast updated on X that trains will face delays due to single tracking near Philadelphia. They apologized for the inconvenience.

Earlier, a “Temporary Hold” was issued due to firefighting efforts near the tracks. The service disruptions occurred during a severe heat wave in Pennsylvania, where high temperatures and humidity strained infrastructure. This heat has fueled brush fires and widespread heat advisories across the state.

Trains will still experience delays due to single tracking near Philadelphia (PHL) area. We sincerely apologize for the delay and inconvenience this may have caused. – Amtrak Northeast

Details of the Fires

Philadelphia Fire Communications Director Rachel Cunningham reported to Newsweek that sparks from a train started the fires. More than 300 firefighters managed the two fires, which reached two-alarm status. No injuries were reported.

Both fires are believed to have been caused by sparks from the same train igniting brush nearby.

The first fire broke out at North 2nd Street and West Erie Avenue at 1 p.m. Fifteen minutes later, a second fire was reported along the tracks at West Glenwood Avenue. Both fires were controlled, the first by 2 p.m., and the second just after 4 p.m. Wind contributed to the spread, requiring R&R companies to relieve exhausted firefighters.

While these fires along tracks aren’t common, we do see some every year when it’s hot and dry so our members are skilled in tackling these fires, and figuring out logistics, Cunningham noted.

Impact on Travel

An Amtrak spokesperson informed Newsweek that emergency personnel were working to contain a brush fire east of Gray 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted the Philadelphia fire marshal.

Two routes were canceled due to ongoing delays: the 654 from Harrisburg to Philadelphia and the 609 from Philadelphia to Harrisburg. The New York-Philadelphia segment is a key part of the Northeast Corridor, handling tens of thousands of passengers daily. Service disruptions can affect the entire East Coast rail network, with delays extending as far south as Washington and as far north as Boston.

Ongoing Updates

Amtrak warned that delays would continue after the service suspension. The railroad will provide updates as conditions change. Travelers should check the Amtrak app or website for real-time status before traveling.
